いんが【因果】

1 〔原因と結果〕 cause and effect; 〔むくい〕 retribution.

●前世の因果 retribution [punishment] for something one has done in a previous existence; the unavoidable result of sin in an earlier existence.

●親の因果が子に報う. ⇒おや¹ 1.

●因果の小車(_おぐるま) the cycle of cause and effect.

2 〔運命〕 karma; fate; destiny.

●因果とあきらめる resign oneself to one's fate [lot]; become reconciled to one's fate; accept [bow to] the inevitable

・こんな男と一緒になったのも, 因果とあきらめるほかないだろう. I suppose I'll just have to resign myself to my fate and put up with him [accept that he's the sort of man fate has chosen for me].

●私は何の因果でこう苦しむのだろう. What have I done to deserve this (suffering)?

●因果を含める persuade sb to accept [bow to] the inevitable; tell sb to reconcile himself to his lot

・彼に因果を含めて辞職させた. I made him realize that there was no alternative and persuaded him to resign. | I managed to persuade him to accept the inevitable and resign.

3 〔不運; 望ましくないが不可避なこと〕 ill fortune; bad luck; fate; destiny; misfortune.

～な unlucky; unfortunate.

●因果な人 an ill-fated [unfortunate, unlucky] person

・あの子は, 生まれた時から両親と離れ離れに育てられた因果な子です. The poor child has lived apart from his parents ever since he was born.

・因果なことには as ill [bad] luck would have it; unfortunately; unluckily; as a result of one's [an] evil karma

・因果な運命 an unlucky fate; an unhappy destiny

・親の死に目にも会えないなんて, 因果な商売だ. You're in a poor [《口》 lousy] trade [job] if you can't even attend at your parent's deathbed.

・物事を悪いほうに悪いほうに考えてしまうのは, われながら因果な性分だと思う. I think it is because of my innate pessimism that I always expect things to go wrong.

・校正者の因果な性(_さが)で, 何を読んでもつい誤字･脱字がないか気になってしまう. My unfortunate proofreader habits mean that whatever I read I always worry whether there are misprints or omissions. | Because of my proofreading habits I'm always bothered misprints and omissions no matter what I read.
